“QWERTY” is named after the first six letters on the top row. The layout emerged in the early 1870s around Christopher Latham Sholes and became commercially dominant through Remington’s typewriters.
QWERTY did not become universal overnight. It evolved during the typewriter era, was refined across early prototypes, and spread because the Remington machines succeeded in the market. Later, training, office habits, and software ecosystems made the layout incredibly difficult to replace.

Once typists, teachers, and offices learned one layout, switching became expensive. QWERTY became a network effect: the value of staying with the standard kept increasing.
Computer keyboards inherited the familiar arrangement. Even after the mechanical constraints disappeared, software, hardware, and user muscle memory kept QWERTY dominant.
Physical keyboards, laptops, phones, tablets, virtual keyboards, and gaming overlays still use QWERTY or direct variants like AZERTY and QWERTZ. The layout remains one of the strongest design survivals in modern tech.
The evidence points to a more complicated evolution. Mechanical reliability mattered, but so did experimentation, letter-pair handling, telegraph operator needs, and the realities of manufacturing.
Q-W-E-R-T-Y became the label because those letters define the layout visually and culturally, much like a brand name created by the keyboard itself.
Remington’s commercial reach, office adoption, and training systems mattered enormously. Good enough plus widespread use beats better-on-paper alternatives surprisingly often.
QWERTY is a classic example of technological path dependence: once a format becomes widely learned, replacing it takes more than a clever redesign.
